Health and Economic Costs of Air Pollution
Dr. Keren Agay-Shay, an environmental epidemiologist who heads the Health and Environment Laboratory at Bar-Ilan’s Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, and her colleagues, used medical records, information from the Central Bureau of Statistics, and air pollution data to calculate the extent to which air pollution caused by emissions from factories and transportation increases mortality and morbidity. Calculations of the number of attributable cases to air pollution were then translated to the economic costs incurred by a loss of life, hospitalization, emergency visits, medication, the loss of workdays, and the like. Web Searches Could Help Detect Covid-19 Outbreaks Early
A complex algorithm, maintained in part by Bar-Ilan University epidemiologist, uses popular Google searches to predict which English towns are headed for outbreaks — 17 days ahead. According to Bar-Ilan University’s Prof. Michael Edelstein, who co-authored the research, the best chance of tackling health emergencies such as the Covid-19 pandemic is to detect them early in order to act early. “Using innovative approaches to disease detection such as analyzing internet search activity to complement established approaches is the best way to identify outbreaks early,” he said. Read More

A rare coin bearing the head of the Roman Emperor Antonius Pius and dating from 158–159 C.E. was found during a training exercise by an Israel Defense Forces soldier on the southern end of Mount Carmel. “The coin discovered is one of the municipal coins minted in the city of Geva Philippi, also known as Geva Parashim,” said Dr. Avner Ecker, a lecturer in classical archaeology at Bar-Ilan University’s Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology. Sonic Energy Turns Liquid Mercury into Solid Nanoparticles
Scientists have surprised even themselves by creating a solid form of mercury at room temperature. They used a technique called sonochemistry to create solid nanoparticles from one of only a few elements on the periodic table to exist as a liquid at room temperature. Sonochemistry uses sound waves to activate chemical reactions. By sonicating liquid mercury drops in water, Prof. Doron Aurbach of Bar-Ilan University and his team dispersed the metal drops into nanospheres. Read More

Commentary: A Pragmatic Peace for Israelis and Palestinians
For more than 70 years, peace between Palestinians and Israelis has eluded the most dedicated and experienced negotiators, and the conflict continues to claim victims on both sides. Therefore, before plunging into another attempt, the Biden administration would be well advised to take a step back and learn the lessons of this bleak history. Prof. Gerald M. Steinberg, emeritus professor of Political Science and Conflict Management at Bar-Ilan University, shares his opinion in this article. Read More

Can COVID-19 Impair Male Fertility?
Initially, the coronavirus was thought to be a type of flu that affects the respiratory system. Today, it is known that the virus affects many bodily systems, including the heart, the kidneys, and other organs, and that some of the damage is only manifested after recovery. Research conducted by Prof. Johnny S. Younis, Vice-Dean for Clinical Education at Bar-Ilan University’s Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, contributes to our understanding of the possible long-term effects of COVID-19, specifically with regards to male fertility. Read More
