April Events: Physics, Brain Sciences, and Undergraduate Degrees

May 1, 2021

Last month’s virtual information sessions were varied and interesting for all participants. These are just some of the events that took place.

Exploring Physics and Brain Sciences at Bar-Ilan University

Bar-Ilan University’s Country Coordinators for India, Divya Shevale and Radhika Haldankar, arranged two very successful and fascinating online information sessions last month. These sessions were aimed at potential students from India, although they were open to anyone attracted to the idea of studying at BIU.

The first webinar, which took place at the beginning of April, focused on the MSc in Physics and the second, which took place towards the end of April, focused on the MSc and PhD in Brain Sciences. Both events attracted numerous potential students.

Frontier Research Opportunities in the Physics Department

Students who were interested in pursuing the MSc Physics program in Israel were introduced to professors and lecturers from the Faculty of the Exact Sciences, who presented the academic part of the webinar. Other presenters included International School staff.

Divya Shevale hosted the event. She welcomed all the students and introduced all the panelists while monitoring the questions and comments throughout.

Prof. Rachel Dekel, Academic Head of Bar-Ilan University’s International School, shed some light on the university and the various faculties and mentioned the university’s ranking and the awards it and the faculty members have received over the years.

Dafi Kremer, BIU’s Director of Marketing and Recruitment, explained why students should opt for BIU as their career option, presenting the various benefits to students, especially those wishing to conduct research at Bar-Ilan University.

Dr. Yossi Ben Zion, Deputy Chairman of the Physics Department, provided an overview of the department and what it offers to international students, while Prof. Efrat Shimshoni, a Professor within the department, shared detailed information about the different areas of research available for graduate and postgraduate studies in Physics.

“The webinar turned out to be very successful,” Shevale said. “We had 35+ attendees and the students were very happy with the information shared by the panelists. Many of them showed a real interest in pursuing the MSc and the PhD in Physics at BIU.

“We received positive feedback from the participants and have already forwarded some applications to the university. We are looking forward to receiving many more great applicants for both the graduate and postgraduate programs,” she said.

Study Brain Sciences in Israel: The World Leader in Research and Development

A few weeks after the well-received Physics webinar, BIU’s Indian representatives hosted the Brain Sciences information session, again with great success. This time, Radhika Haldankar acted as MC and welcomed all participants. She also introduced each presenter and monitored all the questions from the students.

As in the previous webinar, Prof. Rachel Dekel spoke about the university and the various faculties, while Dafi Kremer spoke about why BIU is the best option for their future careers.

Prof. Alon Krongreen, the Head of the Gonda Brain Research Centre, discussed the ongoing research work, eligibility criteria, documents required, and the application process, while Dr. Inna Sukhostinsky, who oversees the academic and research development in the department, spoke on these areas.

The floor was then given over to two current students, Adi Korisky, who is doing postgraduate research for a PhD in Brain Sciences, and Maayan Rehavi, who is pursuing an MSc in Brain Sciences, and they introduced themselves and shared their experiences as students at BIU. They also answered a few questions that were asked by the participants.

At the end of the webinar, a question-and-answer session took place, which was moderated by Dr. Sukhostinsky.

You can watch the full recording of the webinar here.

“We had a good turnout of 50+ attendees for this webinar,” Haldankar said. “The students were happy with the information they received from all the panelists and once again, everyone was very enthusiastic about the event.

“We are excited to say that one participant, Chelciya Gollamandala, applied and has already been registered for the MSc in Brain Sciences. We are looking forward to receiving many more applicants for these programs as well,” she said.

If you’re interested in any of these degrees – MSc/PhD in Physics or MSc/PhD in Brain Sciences – please email our representatives in India (if you’re from India) or get in touch with the International School directly.

Delving into BIU’s Undergraduate Degrees

Bar-Ilan University’s International School hosted an information session to discuss all the options for undergraduate studies offered in English at the university.

The session was hosted by Shira Gafni, our North American representative, and speakers included Dr. Gilad Greenwald from the School of Communications, Dr. Yael Shapira (Literature) and Dr. Natalia Meir (Linguistics) from the Department of English Literature and Linguistics, and Prof. Yigal Levin from the Multidisciplinary Department of Jewish Studies.

Gafni provided a comprehensive background on the university while the others shared insightful information about their respective programs, which included English Literature or Linguistics and our double majors – English Literature and Linguistics, Communications and English, and Communications and Political Science – as well as the new Multidisciplinary BA in Jewish Studies.

Chloe Schwartz, who is currently in the final year of her BA in Communications and Political Science, spoke about her degree and her experiences at Bar-Ilan University. She and the other speakers then answered questions about the programs and the university.

It was a fascinating session, which gave students, parents, and administrators the opportunity to learn more about our undergraduate degree programs. You can watch the recording of this information session here.
