Finding his Place: Profile of a Doctoral Student

January 31, 2024

PhD candidate, Abdel-Aziz Abdrahamane Yassine, hails from Chad in Central Africa. Although Abdel isn’t new to Israel as he spent three years at the University of Haifa, he is new to Bar-Ilan University having joined the Department of Geography and Environment in BIU’s Faculty of Social Sciences during the 2023-2024 academic year. His PhD studies will focus on the field of environment planning and sustainability.

The 34-year-old speaks three languages – English, French, and Arabic – and is learning Hebrew. He has a BSc in Geology from Adam Barka University in Chad, an MSc in Hydrogeology and GIS (Geographic Information System) from the University of Ndjamena in Chad, and a second MSc in Marine Geosciences from the Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences at the University of Haifa. His doctoral research is rooted in his connection to Africa.

“I will be working on the ‘Use of Ra isotope to decipher the overturn history and to assess sublacustrine hydrothermal discharge in the meromictic Lake Kivu’,” said Abdel. Lake Kivu, which lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, is one of the African Great Lakes.

“As I embark on this scientific journey, my aspirations are grounded in a profound curiosity to uncover the secrets hidden beneath the lake’s surface, ultimately contributing to our broader understanding of aquatic ecosystems and the delicate balance they maintain.”

Drawn to Bar-Ilan University

Abdel found out about Bar-Ilan University during his studies in Haifa and had the opportunity to visit the campus.

“I was drawn to Bar-Ilan for its reputation in my field of study and the opportunities it offered for advanced research. The campus visit played a significant role in my decision to pursue a PhD position here,” he said.

“Studying in Israel has provided a unique academic and cultural experience. The rich history, diverse society, and vibrant academic community were all factors that influenced my choices. Bar-Ilan stood out to me because of its strong emphasis on research, the quality of faculty in my department, and the welcoming international community. The campus environment and available resources were also key factors.”

Abdel has found his experience at Bar-Ilan to be enriching thus far. Highlights include engaging lectures, collaborative research opportunities, and a warm and supportive community. He also emphasized the multicultural atmosphere, which has also contributed to a positive academic and personal experience for him.

“In addition, the International School provides excellent assistance and resources for international students. The counselors and staff have been instrumental in helping me navigate the application process and adjust to life in a new city. Their responsiveness and dedication have made a significant impact,” he said.

Finding the Right Mentor

“The faculty and professors in my department have been highly supportive and knowledgeable. The lectures are engaging, and the mentorship provided has been instrumental in shaping my research interests and academic growth.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work under the guidance of my supervisor, Prof. Yishai Weinstein. He is not only exceptionally knowledgeable and smart, but also possesses a unique kindness that makes the learning experience truly exceptional. His expertise, mentorship, and unwavering encouragement have played a pivotal role in shaping my academic journey. I am grateful for the chance to learn from someone so perfect in his field, and I am continually inspired by his dedication to academic excellence and his genuine compassion as a mentor,” Abdel said.

“I would encourage potential Bar-Ilan students to take advantage of the international community at the university, participate in the cultural activities, engage in collaborative research, and explore the various academic opportunities that the university and Israel have to offer. The supportive environment and resources at Bar-Ilan contribute to a fulfilling academic journey,” he concludes.
