Prof. Rivka Tuval-Mashiach, BIU’s New Vice President for International Affairs and the Third Mission

November 7, 2024

Bar-Ilan University has appointed Prof. Rivka Tuval-Mashiach as its new Vice President for International Affairs and the Third Mission, marking a pivotal moment in the institution’s commitment to global collaboration and societal engagement. This newly established position comes in the wake of the dissolution of the Deputy President role previously held by Prof. Moshe Lewenstein, who was instrumental in creating, developing, and overseeing BIU’s International School, which will now fall under Prof. Tuval-Mashiach’s purview as Vice President.

Prof. Rivka Tuval-Mashiach (in red) on a recent trip to Kazakhstan with Prof. Moshe Lewenstein, former Deputy President of Bar-Ilan Univerity; Yael Toledano, former Director of External Relations at the International School; and BIU’s CEO, Zohar Yinon

Prof. Tuval-Mashiach, a distinguished trauma researcher and clinical psychologist, brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as the Academic Head of the International School over the past year. Her extensive background in psychology and her leadership at the Israel Center for Victims of Terror and War (NATAL) equip her with a unique perspective on the challenges faced by contemporary society, especially in light of the past year since October 7.

Prof. Tuval-Mashiach expressed her enthusiasm for the responsibilities that lie ahead. “Being part of the management team at the International School has been an enriching experience—one filled with the unique challenges that the ‘Iron Sword’ war caused—that has fostered growth both for myself and the institution,” she remarked. “I embrace this new role with the determination to build on the foundation laid by Moshe Lewenstein, forging robust international partnerships that enhance our academic environment and broaden our global footprint.”

Bar-Ilan University’s “Third Mission” reflects its dedication to societal contributions, rooted in the Jewish principle of tikkun olam, or repairing the world. Prof. Tuval-Mashiach is poised to expand this mission further, emphasizing the importance of addressing pressing societal and economic challenges through academic engagement and community outreach.

“My aim is to not only foster international collaborations but also to deepen our connections with the communities we serve,” she stated. “By doing so, we can truly make a meaningful impact and contribute to the betterment of society.”

Her research focuses on narrative approaches to trauma, PTSD, and identity construction in the aftermath of collective trauma, showcasing her commitment to understanding and alleviating human suffering. Prof. Tuval-Mashiach has published extensively in these areas, employing both qualitative and mixed methods to advance the field of psychology.

As she transitions into this new leadership role, Prof. Tuval-Mashiach intends to ensure that the academic and emotional needs of students are prioritized, while also assisting doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in their academic pursuits. “I am dedicated to creating a supportive environment where students can flourish academically and emotionally,” she emphasized. “Collaboration is key, and I look forward to working alongside our talented faculty to create a vibrant academic community.”

With her appointment, Bar-Ilan University continues to demonstrate its commitment to excellence in education and its mission to engage with the world. Prof. Rivka Tuval-Mashiach’s leadership promises to usher in a new era of international collaboration and community engagement, embodying the values of tikkun olam and the spirit of innovation that define Bar-Ilan University.
