Program Overview

Applications for 2025/25 close on March 15 2025.

  • All students accepted to the chemoinformatics+ program, irrespective whether they receive a scholarship or not, are exempt from tuition fees.
  • Students that are accepted to the program also participate in the program’s summer schools. The 2024 and 2026 summer schools will be held in Strasbourg and the 2025 summer school will be held in Ljubljana.

Chemoinformatics is a rapidly-evolving field at the intersection of chemistry and computer sciences. As such, it concerns the application of informatics methods to solve chemical problems and its specific methods have become an essential part of the development of new compounds, materials, and processes.

As a major discipline in theoretical and computational chemistry, cheminformatics uses approaches rooted in data sciences such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and database management for the design, creation, organization, storage, dissemination, analysis, visualization, and use of chemical information to tackle current challenges in chemistry.

ChEMoinformaticsPlus: Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Chemoinformatics aims to train specialists for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, with strong skills in chemistry, basic computer science, and a broad knowledge of chemoinformatics methods.

Students who choose the Chemoinformatics and Materials Informatics specialization (Bar-Ilan University and the University of Strasbourg) will spend their first year of the MSc in the Chemoinformatics program at BIU, a semester at Unistra, and a semester at a company or in a research laboratory (internship). Graduates of this specialized program will receive a double master’s degree from both universities.

ChEMoinformaticsPlus: The joint MSc program in Chemoinformatics is a collaboration between seven leading universities in Europe and Israel: the University of Strasbourg (France), which will manage the program and the funding; Bar-Ilan University (Israel); the University of Paris (France); the University NOVA of Lisbon (Portugal); the University of Milan (Italy); the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia); and the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, (Ukraine); as well as two associated partners: the University of Vienna (Austria) and the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industrial University (Azerbaijan).

    The Program

Chemoinformaticians are, first and foremost, chemists with both experimental and theoretical knowledge of chemistry. Therefore, this Master program combines high-level training in computational chemistry and chemoinformatics, computer sciences and data sciences, and simultaneously, requires good skills in organic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, and structural chemistry.

The program includes lectures and tutorials on chemoinformatics, molecular modeling, and quantum chemistry as well as programming and database management. Selected topics in statistics and machine learning, including big data and artificial intelligence, are also addressed.

    Chemoinformatics and Materials Informatics Specialization

During the first year at Bar-Ilan University, students will become familiarized with basic concepts of molecular modeling (e.g., DFT calculations, force fields) and chemoinformatics (e.g., machine learning-based models for smart navigation in the compounds/materials spaces and for predicting compounds/materials properties) and apply this knowledge to research projects focused on drugs and materials design.

The program will be taught entirely in English.

In addition, the proposed course program for the Erasmus students is as follows (there is a bit of flexibility):

    First semester:

    • A seminar in computational chemistry (yearly course)
    • Departmental colloquium (yearly course)
    • Data processing, analysis and visualization in Python for chemistry (this course is not mandatory but is highly recommended. Students that are proficient in Python can take another course).

    Second semester:

    • A seminar in computational chemistry (yearly course)
    • Departmental colloquium (yearly course)
    • Mathematical models in chemistry
    • Computational Chemistry
    • Students that are not proficient in Python can take during this semester an introductory course in Python instead of the data processing course in the first semester).

In addition, students need to take one general course. The one we recommend (and will be given in English) is called “Formative Ideas in the Middle East and Islam” and will be given during both semesters.

      Application Requirements

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree (worth at least 180 ECTS or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physical-Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, or equivalent. You can also apply, if you are in your last year of Bachelor studies and graduate before the Master’s program starts.

Diplomas and transcripts of completed courses and grades are required. If your undergraduate degree has not yet been conferred, you will be asked to present proof of your status upfront. You will be able to present your certificate at a later date, but before the start of the program.

        Scholarships

ChEMoinformaticsPlus is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM), which is funded by the European Union. This funding provides ChEMoinformaticsPlus with the capacity to award approx. 20 scholarships out of 25 places in each edition, meaning that the program will be able to enroll a few self-funded students per edition.
